Custom subscriber segments let you organize subscribers using your own categories.

For example, you can group subscribers by:

  • Interests — Photography, Hiking, Cycling
  • Education Level — High School, College, Degree, Masters
  • Membership level — Free, Pro, VIP
  • Customer type — Customer, Partner, Reseller
  • Language — English, French, German

Each custom segment appears as a field on your subscribers, with a set of choices that you define.

You can then assign those choices manually or let subscribers select them when signing up or managing their preferences.

Note:

Creating segments and assigning choices is available to all Noptin users. A license key is required to filter email recipients using custom segment values.

Create a Custom Segment

To create a segment:

  1. Go to Noptin → Subscribers in your WordPress dashboard in your WordPress admin dashboard, then click the Add New Segment button.
Add new segment button
  1. Enter a name for the segment.

For example, enter Interests if you want to organize subscribers based on the topics they are interested in.

Allow one or multiple choices

When creating the segment, you can allow subscribers to appear in more than one segment. This means that a single subscriber can belong to several choices at the same time.

For example, someone might be interested in both:

  • Photography
  • Hiking
  • Cycling

Leave it disabled when each subscriber should only have one value.

For example, a Membership Level segment might contain:

  • Free
  • Pro
  • VIP

A subscriber would normally belong to only one membership level at a time.

Click Create when you are finished. Noptin will create the segment and open its overview page.

Add choices to the segment

A newly created segment does not contain any choices.

To add one, click Add New, enter a name for your first choice, and click Add.

Noptin add new segment choice

You can also enter a different Label (optional) for the text people see. Repeat for each choice that you want to include in the segment.

For an Interests segment, you might create:

  • Photography
  • Hiking
  • Cycling
  • Travel

Name vs label

You can optionally provide a different Label for a choice.

The name identifies the choice internally, while the label controls the text displayed to subscribers.

This can be useful when you want to change the wording shown on your forms without changing how you identify the segment internally.

Assign a Segment to a Subscriber

You can assign segment choices while editing a subscriber.

Go to Noptin → Subscribers, open the subscriber you want to edit, and locate your custom segment.

Select the appropriate choice or choices, then save your changes.

Let Subscribers Choose Their Own Segment

You can also add a custom segment to a Noptin subscription form. This is useful for preference-based signup forms where subscribers tell you what kind of content they want to receive.

For example, a newsletter form could ask:

What are you interested in?

  • WordPress tutorials
  • WooCommerce
  • Email marketing
  • SEO

Noptin saves their selections to their subscriber profile when they submit the form, then you can use their selections to limit new post notification recipients.

View Subscribers in Each Segment

Open a segment from Noptin → Subscribers to see its available choices.

The Subscribers column shows how many subscribers currently belong to each choice. Click on any number to view the actual list of subscribers who are in the choice.

This makes it easy to see how your audience is distributed across interests, regions, membership levels, or any other categories you create.

Edit a Segment Choice

To rename an existing choice, click its edit icon.

You can update its name or display label without recreating the entire segment.

Noptin rename segment choice

Delete a Segment Choice

Click the trash icon next to a choice to delete it.

Deleting a choice also removes that choice from every subscriber who currently has it assigned.

Check the subscriber count before deleting a choice to make sure you do not accidentally remove information that you still need.

Change a Segment’s Settings

Custom segments are stored as subscriber custom fields. To change a segment’s settings, go to Noptin → Settings → Custom Fields.

From there, you can manage settings such as whether subscribers can view or edit the field on their manage preferences page.

Custom Segments vs Lists and Tags

Noptin gives you several ways to organize subscribers.

Custom segments are useful when you want to create your own structured categories, such as interests, regions, languages, or membership levels.

Lists are useful for grouping subscribers into broader mailing groups and can also be exposed to subscribers as subscription preferences.

Tags are better suited to labels that you assign to subscribers based on their behavior or activity.

For example:

GoalRecommended option
Ask subscribers which topics interest themCustom segment
Group subscribers into newsletters or mailing groupsLists
Mark subscribers who purchased a productTags
Store a subscriber’s regionCustom segment
Let subscribers select several interestsCustom segment
Apply labels based on subscriber actionsTags

You do not have to choose only one method. Lists, tags, and custom segments can be used together to organize the same subscribers in different ways.
